This week Lady Gaga released a powerful video about sexual assault in Universities. The song was written for the documentary called “The Hunting Ground.” The video shows graphic situations of sexual assault committed against women in various situations.
This video exposes the horrifying fact that rape can occur between friends, in a safe place or at a party. Awareness for sexual assault is important and having an influential figure, like Lady Gaga, who can reach wide audiences, is incredible.
The video focuses on the United States but the figures in the United Kingdom are just as shocking. In a 2010 report by the National Union of Students, they “found that 1 in 7 women students had experienced serious sexual or physical violence and 68% had been sexually harassed.” At Cambridge University the statistics are even worse with a third of students, in a 2014 survey, saying they had been sexually assaulted.
It takes a lot of bravery to talk about sexual assault, and Lady Gaga bringing awareness to the issue is a fantastic use of her star power. We should not have to wait until it happens to us to understand the horrible nature of assault, and hopefully this video will prevent appalling acts in the future.
