About

Welcome to Tender

Tender is a nationwide charity harnessing the power of drama and the arts to educate children, young people and adults about healthy relationships. Working with a wide variety of organisations from primary schools to global businesses, we promote respect and equality and prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Why we’re here

Domestic abuse and sexual violence are intensely present in the lives of young people: one in seven children and young people under the age of 18 have lived with domestic violence at some point in their childhood (Women’s Aid), while 16–24-year-olds are at the highest risk of experiencing domestic abuse (ONS, 2022). Our innovative, interactive approach empowers children, young people and adults with the skills and knowledge to recognise unhealthy relationships, nurture healthy ones, and seek support if they need help.

Mission

Using drama and the arts, we prevent abuse by empowering people to have healthy relationships, challenge harmful ones, and promote respect, compassion and equality.

Our values

We’re kind: Care, compassion and support are at the heart of all we do.

We’re creative: We use creativity to start important conversations, explore difficult subjects and spark ideas.

We welcome everyone: We make sure people feel safe, respected and valued.

We celebrate people: We encourage learning, discovery, personal growth and collaboration.

We stand up for what we believe in: We’re not afraid to ask difficult questions or demand change.

Where it all started

Launched in 2003, Tender was founded by Tamsin Larby whose own experience in the theatre revealed how performance could be harnessed to empower children and young people.
