Following ITV and Love Monday’s documentary, Her Majesty The Queen: Behind Closed Doors, Susie McDonald, CEO of Tender, says:
‘That Her Majesty Queen Camilla is using her platform to raise awareness of domestic abuse is invaluable. We hope her powerful documentary and its message reaches as many people as possible.
‘Refuge and support are critical in helping survivors escape abuse and rebuild their lives. But in the long-term, it’s equally important to prevent this abuse from starting at all.
‘Queen Camilla’s documentary demonstrated the lack of understanding across society around domestic violence and abuse – people simply haven’t been given the language and tools to recognise it.
‘One survivor described herself as “A 16-year-old who didn’t know any better.” Every child and young person deserves the education to recognise harmful attitudes and behaviours, and the confidence to seek support – but as the documentary shows, current RSHE is neither consistent nor effective.
‘Only through specialist relationships education – for all children and young people – can we embed this understanding. We need to give potential victims – and perpetrators – the skills to instead lead positive, healthy lives, built on respect and free from abuse.’
