Tender is supporting UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism campaign to end violence against women and girls.
Starting on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Monday 25th November, Tender is raising awareness of the risks facing young women and girls, and the need for expert relationships education.
ONS reports that 16-24 year-olds are at the highest risk of domestic in the UK. Global data also shows that by the time they are 19 years old, almost 1 in 4 adolescent girls (24%) who have been in a relationship have already been physically, sexually, or psychologically abused by a partner. In the majority of countries, adolescent girls are most at risk of forced sex by a current or former husband, partner, or boyfriend.
Tender’s campaign follows the new UN Women report, ‘Femicides in 2023: Global Estimates of Intimate Partner/Family Member Femicides’. Published today, it reports that globally, one woman or girl is killed every 10 minutes by their intimate partner or family member.
Susie McDonald says:
‘16 Days of Activism is a global effort to end the violence women and girls face every day. Every ten minutes, much-loved daughters, sisters and friends around the world are killed – every one of these deaths is inexcusable.
‘We know that young people are at the highest risk, and its during these formative years than dangerous attitudes and behaviours take root.
‘Violence is not inevitable – it’s preventable. By educating all young people in healthy relationships, embedding equality and challenging violent misogyny, we can prevent abuse before it starts.
‘Tender calls on leaders in the UK and around the world to commit to an evidence-based prevention agenda so that all young people have access to this vital relationships education.’
