You can help end violence against women

We all know that violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a problem. A big one.

The bigger the problem, the more impossible it can seem to solve – but there are ways you can help us end violence and abuse once and for all.

‘A national emergency’

From stalking and harassment to sexual assault and domestic violence, police chiefs last week estimated two million women – one in every 12 – are victims of violence every year, citing ‘a national emergency’.

We know that 16- to 24-year-olds are at the highest risk of experiencing domestic abuse (ONS, 2022). Last week’s report found that perpetrators of VAWG are getting younger, and the fastest-growing groups of domestic abuse offenders and victims of domestic abuse are those aged 16 to 19.

The rise of online influencers and toxic misogyny are thought to be a key factor driving violence against women among young people.

The next generation

While services supporting victims and survivors are vital, Tender’s mission is to prevent violence and abuse from happening in the first place.

We do this by engaging the next generation in specialist relationships education. Working with primary, secondary and specialist schools and other youth settings, we deliver a range of short– and long-term workshops and programmes.

Our arts and drama-based sessions empower students with the skills and confidence to build positive, respectful relationships with others, and to consider their attitudes and behaviour in a safe, age-appropriate way..

The creative nature of our work means we can adapt inclusively to the needs of our participants. One example is our online game Relationship Goals, made by and for neurodiverse young people to support them to understand and practice healthy relationships.

Real results

Our drama-based approach gives children and young people the chance to rehearse and observe behaviours in a safe environment, embedding valuable skills for real life.

As a result of taking part in Tender projects:

  • 91% of primary school students said they now know who to talk to if they feel unsafe or need support
  • 96% of secondary school students said they have more knowledge about healthy and unhealthy relationships, while 85% feel more confident in dealing with issues of violence and abuse
  • 93% of all participants enjoyed their project.
  • One school saw a 62% decrease in recorded negative behaviours.

‘The most important thing I learnt was to stand up and be brave.’
