Students and staff from Huddersfield schools Newsome Academy and Moor End Academy have been mixing with celebrities at Tender’s Annual Awards Ceremony, held at The Unicorn Theatre in London. The event celebrated the admirable contributions of young people, teachers and communities towards preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence, through working with abuse prevention charity, Tender. The charity celebrates its 20th year of operation this year.
Tender runs drama-based workshops to promote healthy relationships amongst children and young people. Evidence shows that 16-24 year olds face the highest risk of experiencing domestic abuse and, on average, two women a week are killed by a current or former partner in England and Wales alone.*
Tender’s projects enable young people to recognise the early warning signs that a relationship could become abusive, empowering young people to spot unhealthy behavior early and prevent abuse from escalating. They also learn how to signpost their friends and family to professional support and develop the skills to build healthy relationships based on equality and respect.
Newsome Academy received the Tender award for ‘Outstanding Secondary School.’ Tender’s Programmes Manager for the North, Angharad Turner-Fielder said:
‘I have rarely experienced such an empathetic, gentle, talented and passionate group, despite their differences. I love this school because it reminds me what the word Tender means and what we are all about – kindness, courage and a voice for all.’
The ‘Outstanding Secondary School Teacher’ award went to Moor End Academy’s Abdul Majeed, a teacher and former student of the school, whose commitment to his local community is, in Tender’s words, ‘nothing short of inspiring.’
Among the guests at the event were Tender’s Patron, award-winning actress Olivia Colman, and fellow actresses and Tender Ambassadors Priyanga Burford, Aisling Bea and Amy-Leigh Hickman.
